Attendance Information
overAt Overland High School, we believe that showing up matters—for learning, for connection, and for future success. Each day your student is present, they’re building the habits, relationships, and skills that lead to graduation and beyond. We hope to see your student every day; however, we understand that sometimes students have to miss school. When your student is going to be absent, please follow these procedures.
When calling in your student’s absence(s), please allow 24 HOURS for it to be reflected in your student’s attendance. Please do not leave more than one message regarding the same absence.
Report an absence by leaving a message (this line is voicemail ONLY) on the Attendance Voicemail line. If your student is arriving late to school, they will need to provide a note to the Attendance Office and their teacher will update attendance upon their arrival to class.
To ensure accurate attendance reporting, please include the following in your message:
- Student’s Name (SPELL the last name)
- Date of Absence(s)
- Reason for Absence
- Grade of Student
- Parent/Guardian’s Name (Must be listed in PowerSchool)
- Phone Number (Must be listed in PowerSchool)
Remember, reporting an absence or late arrival does not mean it will be excused. For a complete list of excused absences, please refer to CCSD Board Policy JH.
Our computerized notification system will contact you twice a day at 10:00am and 3:00pm to inform you of unexcused absences. Every effort is made to update PowerSchool in a timely manner in order to avoid you receiving inaccurate notifications; however, changes may take up to 24 hours to reflect in your student’s record. Please do not call more than once to report an absence unless it has been 24 hours and is still not reflected in your student’s attendance record.
Attendance Procedures
TARDY/UNEXCUSED PRESENT
A Tardy (T) is missing the first ten (10) minutes of a class period. An Unexcused Present (UP) is missing more than the first ten (10) minutes of a class period. All students must check in at a tardy station if they are tardy for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th period. We have two (2) Tardy Carts located around our building: one in the A/B Hallway and one in the C/D Hallway. Students who are more than ten (10) minutes late for any class will report directly to class and be recorded as an Unexcused Present by the teacher.
APPOINTMENTS/EARLY DISMISSAL
To arrange for your student’s early dismissal and/or appointment, send a note with your student to obtain an early dismissal pass from the Attendance Office before school begins. If you need your student for immediate release, call the Early Dismissal line at (720) 747-3996 for assistance.
LATE ARRIVAL
If your student will be arriving late to school, send a note with your student to obtain a pass to class from the Attendance Office before going to class. Messages left on the Attendance Voicemail line for late arrival WILL NOT be recorded in PowerSchool. Students who arrive late will need to provide a note to the Attendance Office in order to get a pass to class. Late arrivals will be updated by the teacher upon a student’s arrival to class.
ATTENDANCE CONCERNS
If you believe your student’s attendance was marked in error, your student should communicate directly with their teacher to clear up any discrepancy. If any correction needs to be made, your student’s teacher will email the attendance office with any corrections needed. Due to call volume, the attendance office cannot contact your student’s teacher for you.
LATE BUS
When a CCSD bus arrives late to school, students receive a pass excusing their late arrival. Their teacher updates their attendance upon their arrival to class. For questions or concerns regarding your student’s bus being consistently late, please contact District Transportation at (720) 554-4664, Option 2 between the hours of 5:30am-6:00pm.
Attendance Interventions & Guidelines
ATTENDANCE INTERVENTIONS
To better support student learning and ensure every Trailblazer has the opportunity to succeed, we’ve revamped our attendance process here at Overland High School. While district guidelines for tardies and absences remain the same (see CCSD Board Policy JH), our school-based interventions have been thoughtfully updated to focus on recovering missed instruction and providing meaningful academic support.
Our goal is to help students stay engaged, on track, and connected. These changes reflect our continued commitment to meeting students where they are and ensuring that time in class is as impactful and accessible as possible.
See a full overview of our updated attendance interventions.
We appreciate your partnership in making daily attendance a priority—and in helping every student reach their full potential.
DISTRICT ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
Chronic absenteeism is defined by the state as missing more than 10 days (or 40 class periods) in the school year. If your student is chronically absent, or misses more than 10 days of school, parents or guardians will receive a letter from the district on behalf of our school notifying them of the issue. You will receive a second letter if your child misses more than 15 days of school.
See the complete list of the District’s attendance guidelines & policies.
